A New Era of Learning: QAU’s Response to Pakistan’s Educational Challenges
Currently, the fifth most populous country in the world with more than 243 million people, Pakistan is characterized by one of the highest population growth rates worldwide. Almost 1/5th of the population comprises of youth within the age group of acquiring university education. On the supply side there is a shortage of universities and degree colleges including technical and vocational institutes. Hence there is a need and demand for affordable and quality education at all levels. This includes technical, vocational, and higher education. Distant learning is one of the most effective ways to cater for the youth who are unable to get admission in universities due to any reason. Moreover, the technological innovations and advancements in Information and Communication Technology have transformed the entire education system and it is globally recognized that online learning is also an effective tool of quality education. To meet the unprecedented challenges of the future, Quaid-i-Azam university has also established the Directorate of Open and Distance Learning. The distant learning on one side will cater for the ‘out of university’ youth and at same time focus will be on imparting the latest skills in youth to enhance their employability. The purpose is to avail the Information and Communication Technology and reach to the future students from remote and far furlong areas at their doorstep and capacitate them to become the future leader of the country.
